The Border Slot review
If there’s one thing that Nolimit City are good at creating other than slots, it’s controversy. The Border tackles one of the company’s most political subjects to date – the border between the USA and Mexico. Of course, creating a slot with a controversial topic certainly gets people talking but when it comes to the nuts and bolts, does The Border deliver? Let’s take it for a spin and find out in this review.
The Border Theme and Design
Nolimit City has a very distinctive art style, and the company has worked that into this online slot really nicely. The Border is designed to look like a giant metal gate lined with barbed wire on the top. The characters in the slot don’t shy away from controversy either, with a Mexican drug dealer, an American sheriff, a cigar-smoking bigot, and a beaten Mexican woman all making appearances. Its aim is to grab your attention, and it certainly succeeds at that. Like most Nolimit City titles, it also has some great animations that help bring the whole thing to life. It is perhaps most similar to the company’s San Quentin xWays slot game.
How to Play The Border
Like all Nolimit City slots, The Border is a highly volatile slice of slot action. The game unfolds on a 6x6 grid and uses a cluster-pay mechanic. This means there are no traditional paylines, with winning clusters forming of five or more symbols touching one another vertically or horizontally.
Like many cluster-pay slots, there is also a collapse-style mechanic in place. All winning symbols are removed from the grid and new ones fall down. This continues to happen until there are no winning clusters left. There is also a progressive multiplier that increases by one with each collapse.
The maximum win here is 44,288x the player’s stake. When players reach this, a cut-scene will play displaying the phrase ‘Seized and Destroyed’. The slot has an RTP of 96.17%, but different versions are available, so be sure to check yours before you hit the spin button.
The Border Bonus Features
The Border is absolutely stacked with bonus features. Many of the features have been seen before in Nolimit games, but there are also some new ones thrown into the mix to keep things exciting.
The standard ‘x’ features are all present and correct. Firstly, there are the xWays symbols. These are symbols that will split into up to four versions of their respective symbol. Then there are xSplits. These appear on all reels except the first one, and they split all symbols that are to their left. The xSplit then converts into a Wild. If more than one lands, all symbols that are already split receive a multiplier of up to x64.
Another x feature is the xNudge Cluster Wilds. They can move up or down whenever they are used to make a winning cluster. For every symbol it moves past, the win multiplier for the spin increases by one. If the symbol already has an xMultiplier, then the win multiplier increases by that.
xBomb Wilds can also boost the win multiplier. When these appear, they explode and remove all symbols around them except for xNudge symbols or Scatters. This will also trigger another collapse.
There are also two Free Spins rounds to take advantage of. Firstly, there are Mule Spins, which are triggered by landing six Scatters. Players are given 10 spins, and during those spins, if an xWays symbol is part of a winning cluster, all symbols on the same reel will be infected by the symbol and split up to four times.
If seven Scatters trigger the round, then you will get the Coyote Spins. The same thing happens as the Mule Spins, only all symbols in the cluster are infected, not just the ones on the same reel. All xBombs will also add their multiplier to all symbols with a multiplier already attached.
Depending on the player's location, the Boosted xRip bar may be available. This allows players to boost their bet by 50% to ensure that a scatter is on the first reel.
The Border Slot Verdict
The Border is another example of Nolimit City smashing it out of the park. The game has just about everything you could want from an online slot experience. The bonuses all work together nicely, there is huge winning potential, and the design of the game is nothing if not memorable. As with similar titles like Remember Gulag and San Quentin xWays, Nolimit City has taken a controversial topic and made it into a truly memorable online slot experience.
