Everything is about universes and crossovers these days, whether it's movies, TV or video games. Are we now about to get the NetEnt extended universe? It seems unlikely, but the idea does sound like fun. Superstars brings together several of NetEnt’s most popular properties and puts them all in one slot. There is no real rhyme or reason given for this though, with the characters all just appearing and taking part in some sort of TV show. Does the slot deliver on the legacies left by these characters, or is it just a harmless bit of fun celebrating NetEnt’s back catalogue? Theme and Design
The general design of the Superstars slot is kept quite basic. It has been designed to look like some sort of TV show, with a small purple stage and some rainbow colours playing host to the reels. The characters making an appearance in the game are Gonzo of Gonzo’s Quest fame, Finn from Finn And The Swirly Spin, Lady Pig from Piggy Riches, Brute from Space Wars, and, oddly, the star from Starburst. There is no explanation as to why these are all in a slot together, but it is quite fun seeing them all in one place. The slot will not score highly for design, but it does tick a few nostalgia boxes.
How to Play
NetEnt has wheeled out some of its stars for this slot, but it keeps the gameplay simple. The game uses a slightly larger than average 5x5 grid, with 45 ways to win on each spin. The symbols in the slot are made up of the aforementioned characters and the standard card symbols. We can’t help but think they missed a trick by not incorporating other elements of these classic slots into the game.
The slot has an RTP of 96.08%, though different versions are available, so be sure to keep your eyes peeled. The maximum win on offer is 4,596x the player’s stake.
Bonus Features
The Superstars slot game is focused around a board-game style bonus. This is triggered when players land three or more Scatters.
The game will switch to a board with a set of reels inside of it. The triggering Scatters will be placed randomly on the grid as multipliers. If a dice was on reel five, then it will be added as a multiplier on the grid and players will be given a roll of the dice. Players are also given three spins of the reels. Whenever a new multiplier lands, the spins reset to three.
When players roll the dice, they will move around the grid on the outside. They can trigger features by landing on the marked spaces. The following features are available:
- Finn: This will add up to five multiplier prizes on the reels. These will then be combined into one, collecting all of their prizes.
- Gonzo: Gonzo can multiply up to 24 symbols by up to x5.
- Miss Banks: Miss Banks, the pig, will throw random multipliers onto the reels with prizes up to x5.
- Space Wars: Brute appears in his ship and clones three of the highest-paying multipliers. Three respins are then given and only these symbols can land.
- Starburst: This adds up a stack of three multipliers onto the reels worth up to x5.
- Extra Spin: This increases the number of maximum spins from three to four.
- Extra Life: If players can make it all the way around the board, they will be given an extra life. When they run out of spins, they will reset back to three.
Players will also spot a wheel symbol on the board. When players land on this, they will get to spin a bonus wheel. This has a selection of features of its own, each of which helps you around the board. They are as follows:
- 1 or 2 extra dice.
- +1: This increases the value of all multipliers by one.
- Random: This will randomly reward one of the character-based bonuses.
- Upgrade: Adds the bet value to blank squares on the board. If you land on one, all of the multiplier prizes will increase.
- Replay: This will replay the next bonus that players trigger.
At the end of the round, all of the multipliers are added together and are paid out. The round finishes when there are no respins left.
Slot Verdict
Superstars is, at first glance, the kind of slot that could be a shameless cash-in on popular properties. It’s fair to say, though, that this isn’t the case. NetEnt has a colourful back catalogue, and it has dipped into it here to provide a fun, if not reasonably forgettable, online slot game. The bonus round is the biggest selling point here, and if you’re into that kind of thing, then the nostalgia might also pull you in. It’s certainly not as memorable as the games that it has borrowed characters from, but you could do much worse than taking this for a spin.
