Rainbow Riches Slot review
When it comes to online slot themes, the luck of the Irish has to be up there as one of the most enduring. There are hundreds of different slots that use this theme, but the most popular of the lot has to be Barcrest’s Rainbow Riches series.
The series has seen many releases over the years, each of which has used different gameplay mechanics and features to help distinguish itself from those that came before it. In this review, we are going to be taking a look at the original Rainbow Riches slot game, the one that started it all, and finding out whether it manages to live up to the legacy it has created.
Rainbow Riches Theme and Design
While it has gone on to inspire some colourful spin-offs, the original Rainbow Riches does fall behind a little in the design department. There is very little to shout about, with a static backdrop of a rainbow and some mountains filling the background. The colour scheme is not even particularly cheerful, with the whole thing being bathed in purple lighting. The soundtrack has bursts of life when you hit the spin button, conjuring up images of an Irish jig, but this lacks the constant upbeat tunes of its sequels.
How to Play Rainbow Riches
The base game for Rainbow Riches keeps things nice and basic. The game unfolds across a standard 5x3 game grid with 20 adjustable paylines. To choose the number of lines active, players can use the control panel at the bottom of the screen. Down there, they will also find the total bet per line.
The minimum bet per line is €0.01, and the maximum is €25. With all lines active, this gives the game a huge betting range of €0.20 all the way up to €500. Frankly, it’s hard to imagine a budget that this game doesn’t cover. The game has an RTP of 95%, putting it below the industry average of 96%.
Rainbow Riches Bonus Features
The biggest selling point for the Rainbow Riches slot is its three bonus features. There are three Scatter symbols in the game, and landing three or more of each will trigger its respective bonus.
First, there is the Road to Riches feature. The Scatter for this displays the franchise’s leprechaun mascot. This is a trail-style feature where players roll a dice to advance along a money trail. Along the trail there are multipliers. Players can end the round by hitting the collect button. They will then be rewarded with their total bet multiplied by whatever number they have stopped on.
The Wishing Well bonus is triggered by the Scatter that displays a wishing well. This is a simple pick-me-style game where players have three wishing wheels to choose from. The well then reveals a multiplier prize.
Finally, there is the Pots of Gold bonus. A rainbow behind a pot of gold represents the Scatter here. This is a money wheel style bonus, with players winning whatever value the wheel lands on.
Rainbow Riches Slot Verdict
Playing the Rainbow Riches slot game now feels like a very rough first draft. The title inspired a range of great spin-offs, and many of the elements that made them so much fun are in their formative stages here. Sadly, outside of the fun bonus features, there is very little to write about. Fans of the series may find some nostalgic charm here, but anyone else will not find much value.
